Consulting
Individuals employed by the University in regularly-budgeted positions ("hard money" positions) may have part or all of their time assigned to sponsored projects. However, the total workload of faculty or staff (regular university responsibilities plus sponsored project assignments) will not exceed 100% of full time Faculty or staff time assigned to sponsored projects will be charged at the same rate (daily, weekly, monthly) as the regular salary of the faculty or staff member.
Total payments to faculty and staff members for all work assigned through the university (regular job responsibilities plus any sponsored project activities) may not exceed 100% of base salary, except for the following specific circumstances:
- Faculty and other professional staff may receive supplementary compensation for sponsored project activities under the university's internal consulting policy when the following conditions are met:
- services are performed in addition to those associated with the person's salaried employment
- services are provided across departmental lines or involve a separate or remote operation
- prior approval of the University has been obtained and such consulting arrangements are specifically provided for in the award instrument, (e. g., grant document, fully executed contract, Memorandum of Agreement, etc.).
- In rare circumstances (when permitted in federally-funded projects) faculty or staff may receive overload payments for duties assumed over and above their regular university assignments. Such overloads must be approved in advance by the department head and dean.
